history

The younger child of a Seeker father and Keeper mother, Rhaela was born in Corvos shortly before its Garlean occupation. Like many of the other children of the G tribe, Rhaela and her elder twin, Rhaena, were spirited away to distant shores as soon as it was evident that Corvos was likely to be the next province ground underneath Garlean jackboots. For the twins, this meant a lengthy, perilous progress via ship: first, to Thavnair, then onward through the Drown, the Sea of Ash, Ul'dah, the Rhotano Sea, Limsa Lominsa, and the Indigo Deep, ending finally in the Sharlayan colony of Emporium. There, they were entrusted into the care of their mother's cousin and her wife. Rhaela adapted quickly to Sharlayan culture, enamored with books and learning almost as soon as her beloved Aunt Theodora plunked a primer in her hands and set about teaching her letters and sums 'properly'.In 1562, at the age of 8, Rhaela accompanied her sister and her aunties in the overnight exodus from Emporium in order to return to Sharlayan. They took up residence in the estate of Aunt Theodora: a somewhat more affluent setting than they had previously occupied in Emporium, complete with servants, butlers and tutors. Rhaela florished in the nicely defined lines of this new life, and in her late teens she was successfully admitted to the Studium with a focus in history. She earned her Archon mark with a thesis centered around the War of the Magi and its potential aetherical consequences as the primary cause of the Calamity of Water.With her formal education more or less finished, Rhaela was left at something of a crossroads. There were no shortage of possible career paths ahead that would leave her safely within Sharlayan. However, with the obvious growing discontent of her twin sister in the strict and sometimes stodgy confines of Sharlayan and the growing isolationist maneuverings of the Bibliothecs, Rhaela opted to set off with her sister toward Vylbrand in order to start a practical study of the ruins of Nym, with the two eventually drifting across Aldenard proper in order to scout and record their findings of other toppled and near-forgotten city-states — Gelmorra, Mhach, Amdapor, Sil'dih — with varying degrees of success.As they adventured, the twins naturally fell in with other adventurous types, forming a tight band of companions as they roamed in pursuit of knowledge, history, and treasure — very often moreso the latter than the former, much to Rhaela's continued consternation.
